Finding the perfect Mother of the Bride dress

Many women out there are searching the shops for the perfect Mother-of-the-Bride or Mother-of-the-Groom dress – are you one of them?

It’s almost summer and that means wedding season is here in Ireland! It can be very difficult to find the right dress for your daughter’s or son’s wedding.

There will be a lots pictures taken and the look is very important. There might be certain colours suggested – or banned! – for the wedding party. It’s also a long day and you want to feel comfortable as well as beautiful.

That’s a lot to ask for from an off-the-rack dress.

Made-to-measure Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom dresses

At Stitch and Style we make bespoke Mother of the Bride or Groom dresses. Many clients come to us because they are tired of looking through endless racks of dresses and finding the same style but in different colours.

We think that you deserve more than just a boring dress made of polyester that costs a fortune. Using the best quality fabrics, we will design a dress to match your personality and to suit you perfectly.

You don’t need to worry about sizing with a custom-made dress. We can advise on flattering cuts and silhouettes made to both suit your figure and your own style.

We will also help you pick colours which will match your natural colouring (the colour of your hair, eyes, and skin), based on colour theory, ensuring you look amazing on the day and in the photos.

Finding and altering ready-made Mother of the Bride dress

Want to see if you can find something on the rack? If you are going to look for a ready-made dress, here are some handy tips:

  1. Look through trends for inspiration and take account of the likely weather on the day.
  2. Remember to choose a good quality fabric. It is best to pick natural fabrics which will not crease or make you sweat on the day.
  3. The choice of colour is just as important as the style. It can make you look 10 years younger -or older! Shades should be selected based on your natural colouring.
  4. It is a good idea to bring someone shopping with you. Someone whom you can trust and who will give an honest opinion before you buy an outfit.

The key thing to remember is that it is important to choose the best size for you. Do not buy the dress one or two sizes smaller with an intention to lose weight. If you do lose weight a good dressmaker can alter the dress to perfection, but it is always easier – and less expensive – to taper a larger dress in rather than to let a smaller dress out.

When to contact a wedding dressmaker

This is the busiest time for year for most dressmakers. We recommend contacting us to make an appointment at least 2 months out, but the more notice you can give, the better!

Our dressmaking studio is located in Glanmire, Cork, and we have a spacious fitting room where you can try on your outfit. You can bring with you your friends and family on the day too.

If you need help with dress alteration, or if you decide to design your own outfit, we can help you create the perfect dress for the big day.

Want to know more? You can contact us with questions or make an appointment.

Here’s to a beautiful day!
